Types of Planned Gifts

Immediate Gifts

The advantage of an Immediate Gift is that you get to see it put to work right away. The most common types of immediate gifts are those by cash, check, or credit card, and are fully tax-deductible.  Gifts of long-term appreciated securities have the advantage of not only being tax deductible, they have the added benefit of by-passing the capital gains tax.  When making a gift of securities, be sure to call for instructions to make the transfer of ownership to the United Way of Deschutes County brokerage account, rather than selling the stock yourself and thereby incurring a taxable gain.

Another type of “immediate gift” is that of real estate.  There is a process for gifting real estate and turning that gift into the proceeds that will benefit United Way of Deschutes County and it’s programs and services, but once the real estate is sold and the cash is available, then the gift is immediate.  If you are interested in this type of gift, please contact our office for a consultation.

Deferred Gifts

You may be in a situation where you or someone you love needs the income from your gift for a period of time before the charitable cause receives the ultimate benefit.

Charitable Gift Annuities

A Charitable Gift Annuity is a gift that will provide income to you or someone else for life, and the amount of income will be determined solely by your age.  The charitable beneficiaries that you have named will receive their benefit after the death of the gift annuity holder or holder’s.  Charitable Gift Annuities can be funded with gifts of cash, securities, or real estate.  Charitable Gift Annuities are advantageous for senior donors, since the payout rate is determined by the age of the donor, and the older the donor, the higher the payout.

Charitable Remainder Trusts

Compared to the age determined rate above, Charitable Remainder Trusts (CRT) are the choice of younger donors, or for those who wish a little more flexibility and choice than is available with the Charitable Gift Annuity.  With the CRT you make the choice about the income that you want to receive at the time that you set up the trust.  You may choose either an Annuity Trust that pays you a fixed income for the duration of the trust based on the initial trust value, or a Unitrust, which provides you income payments based on the annual value of the trust.

When a CRT is funded with appreciated assets, it not only has the advantage of receiving a charitable tax deduction, but in addition will allow for the by-passing of the capital gains.

Or, you may be in a situation where you need your assets now, but you would like make provision for charitable causes as part of your estate plan.

A charitable bequest is a gift of property, securities, or a sum of money given through your will or living trust.  A charitable bequest gives you the pleasure of knowing that those same possessions that brought you satisfaction will continue to enhance the lives of others.   In addition, your gift may be deducted from your estate and will reduce your estate’s taxes.

Bequests are a way to make a significant contribution to the future of Deschutes County through the United Way.  We are deeply grateful to those friends, who, through their Will or Living Trust, make a continuing gift to support the programs and services of United Way and our funded agencies and programs.
